INSPIRING YOUNG HAIRDRESSER, ROSIE, JOINS EXCITING YOUTH TEAM
Bed Head Studio in London

Rosie from Yazz Number One Hair Studio salon has won one of 20 coveted places in the TIGI Inspirational Youth Team, beating young stylists from across the UK and Germany.

For the next 6 months a team of top professionals will work to refine the Team’s hairdressing skills, and also work on their presentation skills and fashion knowledge. Ultimately the Inspirational Youth Team is trained to take part in the Inspirational Youth Show at “Salon Live”, a 3-day hairdressing exhibition at Excel in the London Docklands - in front of an audience of over 1000 hairdressers.

The 6-month training period includes a 2-day photographic shoot, for which each Team Member will create their own interpretation of the new season’s looks, working together with a team of top makeup artists and fashion stylists and shooting at Bed Head Studio in London.

Inspirational Youth is the brainchild of iconic hairdresser, Anthony Mascolo, who wanted to share his knowledge and experiences with the hairdressing stars of tomorrow, giving them the opportunity to not only learn more about hairdressing, but also the very important experience of team membership. This is the 7th year that TIGI have sponsored the Inspirational Youth Team.

TIGI not only fund all the training but also provide the team members with a full kit-bag of TIGI equipment including a hairdryer, complete brush set, straightening irons, training books and DVDs. After the first training session each team member returned to their own salons, loaded down with their ‘goodies’ and already growing in confidence.

……..And confidence is one of the main goals that the mentors focus on. Team leader, Nick Irwin, TIGI European Creative Director said: “For all the mentors, Inspirational Youth is an emotional experience. On the first day, the individual young hairdressers arrive, looking nervous. After each training session, you see them grow, both as a person and as a team. The final day, when I see them on stage I am always thrilled to see how they have developed. It is a really interesting and satisfying journey.”

Inspirational Youth is certainly a ‘journey’ for each of the 20 young hairdressers and not always an easy one, but it’s exciting, interesting, enjoyable and a fantastic opportunity, which they all say is ‘life changing’.

LA CONFIDENTIAL
It’s the ‘City of Angels’, built on dreams and imagination, and thriving on possibilities. And that’s exactly what made Los Angeles the perfect setting for the weekend with TIGI…

After a typically British summer, a trip to Los Angeles during its ‘winter’ was just the ticket. Why? Because Los Angeles has, without comparison, the worlds best weather. It is sunny roughly 325 days a year, with temperatures averaging a balmy 25˚c, and when Virgin flight VS007 landed with its precious cargo of 70-something TIGI team members, creative artists and hairdressing guests, the city was in the middle of a glorious heat wave. It was bliss. With a capital B.

“Our aim is to have an inspirational weekend in one of the most exciting cities in the world, incorporating business, creativity and lots of fun,” said TIGI Managing Director of European Operations, Simon Ostler. And he was a man of his word.

From the stretch Hummers waiting at the airport, to A-list restaurants and bars (Skybar at Britney’s favourite hotel hang-out, the Mondrian, offered impossibly glamorous views of the city), plus the poolside cocktail parties at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza (suitably located on the Avenue of the Stars), TIGI ensured its guests kicked back in LA-LA Land in serious style. Guided tours offered the opportunity to experience the new Simpsons ride at Universal Studios, or a tour of Hollywood’s most famous homes – sadly, Posh ‘n’ Becks were in New York, launching yet another his ‘n’ her fragrance – and just about everyone shed a few dollars in Rodeo Drive’s designer shops at some point during the trip.

It was all delicious preparation for the substantial treats in store, courtesy of TIGI top brass, Anthony and Bruno Mascolo, and the company’s senior business and creative teams.

BUSINESS CLASS
The story behind the TIGI brand is an interesting one - a tale of four talented brothers from a famous Italian hairdressing family, initially united by dreams of hairdressing greatness, but whose subsequent creative fall outs led to the de-merger of one of the most recognised hairdressing brands in the world. When its told first-hand by the Mascolo brother who gambled everything on success in America, it becomes electrifying.

Bruno Mascolo, Chief Executive Officer of TIGI Worldwide and Toni&Guy USA, attempted to enter the US professional haircare Arena twice before e finally found success with a Dallas based salon, in 1985.

As he explained for the first time to a UK audience: “I was raised in London, but when I came to the US on a Sebastian tour, I fell in love with America. So I saved up money to start a business there. Unfortunately, I met the wrong people who advised me on the wrong things. The money was wasted. Then I saved more money and came back again, a lot wiser. I met more clever people, but again lost my money. The third time my brothers weren’t prepared to support me, so I sold my house and car, and came back. By using my own money, I made my own commitment not to be humiliated again.”

Over the years that followed, with help from two of his brothers, Guy and Anthony, his wife, Kyara, and a supportive executive team that included hairdressing pals Paul Joseph and James Morrison, Toni&Guy USA has grown into $270 million business, comprising more than 75 Toni&Guy salons across the country, nine training academies and TIGI haircare and cosmetics lines that are so phenomenally successful, it makes your eyes water.

In 2002, the Mascolo brothers decided to de-merge the TIGI and Toni&Guy brands. Bruno, Guy and Anthony now own TIGI Global, which is all of the product internationally, as well as Toni&Guy salons and academies in the US, Canada and South America. Toni, who lives in London, owns Toni&Guy academies and salons, plus the Toni&Guy brand in the rest of the world.

Its an arrangement that left the hairdressing rife with rumours of ongoing rows family splits, but as Bruno described it, things couldn’t be more different. “Toni’s children had grown up and wanted to bring kids into the business,” he explains. “A family business is great, but we wanted to maintain our family relationship. Things are amicable between us all – we see each other; we stay at each others houses.”

The TIGI culture - which is driven by technology, education and excitement has been shaped by Bruno’s experiences throughout his career. The launch of TIGI colour this year is a significant new stepping stone.

“Being independent in business means we are in control of our destiny,” Bruno. “It allows us to be who we are and we can move a lot quicker than others. We look to department stores, make-up stores and even wine bottles for different ideas. That’s the reason I think we have been able to maintain out innovation.”

Co-founder of Toni&Guy/TIGI USA, Glasgow born James Morrison has spent two decades travelling the world, educating hairdressers and sharing his inspirational story. He also runs three salons in Calafornia, with a combined turnover in excess of $6 million.

During his 30-year multi-faceted career, he has written a highly successful book. Alphabet of Balance, received countless accolades for his creative talent as a hairdresser, has been named one of the top educators of the year by Modern Salon magazine and counts Simon Fuller, manager of LA-based David and Victoria Beckham, as a close friend (his impressions of Posh and family are hilarious).

For the UK group, James led a seminar, entitled ‘Staff, Clients and Profitability’, sharing his secrets of business success in such an engaging style that it was instantly designed necessary to fly him over to Britain for an extended two-day version!

REMIX
Kerpow! In another exclusive for the UK hairdressing group, an incredible TIGI line-up of Anthony Mascolo, Nick Irwin, Zak Mascolo and James Morrison previewed their brand new Remix collection – a series of wearable, versatile cuts and underpinned by new TIGI colour. Look out for the videos and photography (all shot in TIGI’s inimitably edgy style) later this year. The team also presented TIGI’s incredible Alta Moda looks, developed out of a creative collaboration with Vivienne Westwood and featuring some of the designer’s most stunning dresses – even Pat Mascolo was tempted onstage to demonstrate an avant-garde make-up look. Exciting, visual and totally inspiring!

The buzz
Club Matrix Conference 08, Puerto Banus

In September, over 300 UK and Ireland Matrix Hairdressers jetted out to Puerto Banus, Spain, as part of the Club Matrix International Conference.
The programme showcased the Matrix Artistic team live in two specialised rooms, focusing on cutting and colour.
Delegates were also offered 3 seminars in a dedicated Business room, covering retail, team motivation and maximising business potential.
The highlight of the 4 days for many was the ‘white hot’ themed gala dinner where everyone danced the night away at the world famous Nikki Beach club.

We were treated like royalty meeting hooker and young, Paul Faltrick and dancing the night away with Martin Woodgate and Marcus, marketing manager for the UK Matrix Brand.

We had great fun around the pool with the other Matrix Destination Fame Winners Dan and Gil.

TIGI FUTURE STARS OF THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSING INDUSTRY
TIGI INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH TEAM 2008

A team of 12 young hairdressers were carefully selected from hair salons across the United Kingdom to work with the TIGI International Creative team, under the leadership of Anthony Mascolo, TIGI International Creative Director, and Nick Irwin European Creative Director.

Charlotte from Yazz Number One Hair Studio, Rawdon has been selected to join the 2008 TIGI Inspirational Youth Programme.

Talented hairdresser Charlotte from Yazz Number One Hair Studio, Rawdon Leeds has been selected to join the prestigious TIGI Inspirational Youth Team for a twelve month intensive training programme in London under the instruction of a talented team of TIGI hairstylists, photographers, makeup artists and show producers.

Inspirational Youth was started 3 years ago by global hair Product Company: TIGI. It is a training programme designed to give a group of young hairdressers the challenge of creatively preparing a show for Salon Live. This is a specially constructed 2000-seater theatre that is set up during the weekend of the Salon International Hair & Beauty Exhibition and is held at London’s top exhibition venue: Excel.

The training programme takes place over a 12 month period prior to the show. Each of the Inspirational Youth team members are nominated by their individual salon owners, but are nurtured as a team by the TIGI International Creative Team.

Anthony Mascolo, International Creative director of TIGI and renowned hairdresser, photographer and image makeup, believes strongly in pushing the next generation: 'Youth are our future. I have always said that you have to listen to them and that you can learn a lot from them. They have the radical ideas, they bring about changes in the world and they are aware of changing trends, even before they happen.

But you know, they need us too. We've got the experience, knowledge and confidence. We can help them grow, inspire their creativity and motivate them and that's why I started Inspirational Youth.

I wanted to create a team of young hairdressers and take them on the ultimate experience - a training course that ended up with doing a show. They learn how to create amazing hair, how to work on stage, how to create hair for a photo shoot, and how to talk to camera. They get to work with my top guys (which is pretty special in itself): Nick Irwin, our European Creative Director and other members of the Creative Team, give them one-to-one support, Mike Esa our Show Director gives them his first hand knowledge of presentation skills and working on stage, Mauro Carraro, head of our film department, gives them hints on interview techniques and films them too, the photographers at Bed Head Studio all work with them to give them tips on holding model castings as well as actually working on a shoot and Linda Evans, who is both our Cosmetics Director and my PR, is managing the Team this year to really help them fuse as a strong team entity.'

If past years are anything to go by, the individual team members will not only greatly enhance their skills and their confidence, but they will also bond as a unique team and make some lasting friendships.

Yazz up and coming Jemma Leach
TIGI INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH TEAM 2007

Yazz up and coming JEMMA LEACH
creative stylist at Yazz One hair studios in Leeds, might be just 20 years old but she’s already kickstarted a great career in hairdressing by being selected as a member of TIGI’s Inspirational Youth. The team of 11 young stylists gets the opportunity to spend six months working with the TIGI Creative Team, a cluster of top hairdressers, photographers, fashion stylists, PR experts, show directors and film makers from TIGI Bed Head. The culmination of the training is the TIGI-sponsored Inspirational Youth Show, for which the team puts together its own collection.

The collection...
...Began with a culmination of moodboards created by all 11 stylists in the team. We each came up with visual images that best described the sort of look we wanted to create, not just of the hair but the make-up, clothes and even the look of the model too. The TIGI Creative Team would then give us more direction, suggesting other ideas we might not have thought of.

Our focus...
...Was really to create an eclectic group of styles that represented our own personalities and ideas. We didn’t have a brief. We then had to come up with two looks: an avant-garde style and a more classic, commercial look, one of which we would then choose to create for the Inspirational Youth show. Luckily, the whole team was very different
and having our own interests and inspirations made putting together an eclectic collection easy, though we did have to sit down and discuss our ideas together and make some changes to ensure it worked as a whole.

My inspiration...
...Came from the textured styles in TIGI’S 2006 Ricochet Collection, as well as some of the TIGI shows I've been to and the latest trends, particularly the ‘60s and ‘70s revival. I love some of the new generation of models such as Lily Cole too. I think we can relate to her more than some of the older models. Her baby doll look was definitely an inspiration when it came to choosing my model and was the reason i went for a redhead.

The techniques...
...Were a mixture of old-fashioned, classic styling, blow-drying, heated rollers, pin curling and clipping but with a modern twist. We used a lot of the TIGI Hardcore Curling Sticks, which are great for creating bends. For my avant-garde style, i created an old-fashioned vertical row on the front of the head but, again, with a modern twist.

Our kit bags...
...Had been packed by TIGI with Anthony Mascolo scissors, a Hardcore styling kit and various other products that became must-haves throughout the shoot, such as Superstar Hairspray, Headrush, Hard To Get and Masterpiece Hairspray, which was brilliant for creating shine and hold.

We learned...
...How to put a complete look together, from the clothes, hair and make-up right down to how you get that final polished look on camera. I gained so much from learning how to present myself to an audience, with the help of show producer Mark Esa. My confidence in the salon and in myself has definitely improved. It has been the most incredible experience of my hairdressing career and it’s made me want to get more involved in stage and photo work.

JCT600 ASTON MARTIN FASHION SHOW

On Thursday 24th April 2008 Yazz and the artistic team supported a fashion show in aid of Breast Cancer at the JCT600 garage, Leeds.

Yazz provided all the hair and make up for all of the models and staff for the evening. The event was a great success and we helped to raise £4,500 for the charity which was an excellent effort.

The surroundings were amazing full of Maserati, Porshe, Ferrari, Bentley and Aston Martin, we were all in our element!

We have a couple coming up this year and we will keep you informed of our achievements.
